Pedestrian Accident Fatalities in Indianapolis Nearly Triple Over Previous Years

In collisions involving motor vehicles, pedestrians have little in the way of protection. For this reason, pedestrian accidents tend to be particularly severe, often resulting in debilitating and potentially fatal personal injuries. A recent report shows that the number of these accidents has increased over the past year, with fatal accidents nearly three times as high. The following outlines what you need to know about this situation, and how you can keep yourself and those you love safe.

Pedestrian Accidents in Indianapolis

A May 2018 Fox 59 News report claims that the number of pedestrian fatalities in our area during the first few months of the year nearly tripled the number reported the previous year. Based on traffic information from the state Department of Motor Vehicles, between January 1 and May 15, 2017, four pedestrians were killed as the result of collisions involving motor vehicles. This year, during the same period, 11 pedestrians were killed, while more than 120 others suffered serious personal injuries.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) states that many of these accidents occur when pedestrians and drivers are next to each other, as well as in traffic intersections. To help prevent these accidents, the DPW plans to provide maintenance on sidewalks, making them safer and more user-friendly, while installing new crosswalks and warning lights for drivers. The city is willing to invest thousands of dollars in making improvements and encourages residents to speak up when they notice problem areas. According to traffic safety officials and those in the community, reckless driving behaviors such as speeding, disregarding traffic signals, and distracted driving are often to blame when pedestrian accidents do occur.

Protect Yourself Against Personal Injuries While Walking

While improvements are being made, there are some steps residents can take to protect themselves against pedestrian accidents and the potentially severe injuries that can occur as a result. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends the following:

  • Remain on sidewalks wherever possible.
  • Look for crosswalks or lighted intersections when crossing busy streets.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings when walking, avoiding earbuds and other distractions.
  • Wear brightly colored clothing, particularly when walking at night.
  • Never assume a driver will stop, even at intersections.
  • Make eye contact with motorists to ensure they see you.
  • Avoid walking if you have been drinking or are under the influence of medication.
