There are many motorcyclists on the roads of Indianapolis, IN just like anywhere else. Many people choose to get around via motorcycles as their vehicle of choice. Many times, motorcyclists get a bad reputation for being reckless and dangerous and for giving very little respect to other drivers on the road. While there may be some bikers that aren’t as safe as they could be, the fact is most people who ride motorcycles practice safe driving standards just like any other driver on the road. Unfortunately, not all other drivers are careful and respectful of bikers.
A motorcyclist is dead after he was involved in a collision with a car recently, near Lafayette. According to the accident report, the driver of the car, an 80-year-old man, was heading in the opposite direction as the motorcycle when he attempted to turn off the road onto a side street. The man pulled in front of the motorcycle, which caused the fatal collision. The 32-year-old man on the motorcycle suffered severe head trauma and later died at the hospital. According to reports, authorities believe that the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
At the time of this report, law enforcement officers had given the 80-year-old driver of the car, who was not injured, a chemical test. The results of that test are still pending, but initially authorities did not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. However, the investigation is still ongoing and if it is determined that the man committed a traffic violation then he could be held liable for the accident and the motorcyclist’s death. That means the victim’s family could decide to pursue a wrongful death claim or lawsuit against the other man.
This is a tragic situation that quite possibly could have been avoided if more caution had been exercised. This is the kind of accident that happens to motorcyclists on a regular basis because people don’t pay enough attention to them on the road. Motorcyclists deserve the same respect as any other driver. Anyone who has been hurt in a motorcycle accident should contact the Law Office of Holland & Holland in Indianapolis right away.
