Indianapolis Residents Should Know About New IKEA Recalls

Indianapolis Residents Should Know About New IKEA Recalls

Nobody should have to worry about whether furniture they have purchased at a retail establishment is safe for use. However, furniture can have serious product safety issues, resulting in personal injuries and subsequent recalls. As many Indianapolis residents who shop at IKEA know, the Swedish furniture store has been in the news quite frequently as a result of product recalls. Just a short time ago, the company recalled about 29 million dressers following the preventable deaths of six children and serious injuries to others. According to a recent article in People, IKEA has issued another recall, but this time the product is a folding beach chair. While the recall has been in place long enough to allow retailers to remove these beach chairs from stores, consumers could purchase the product second-hand prior to a summer vacation.

What else do you need to know about this dangerous product?

IKEA Recalls Mysingsö Folding Beach Chair

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a report concerning IKEA Mysingö folding beach chairs earlier this year, indicating that the “beach chairs can collapse, posing fall and fingertip amputation hazards.” Prior to issuing the recall, IKEA received 13 separate reports of incidents involving the beach chairs. In 10 of those cases, individuals reported injuries, and six of the cases involved an injured consumer who had a fingertip amputated as a result of the chair. To be clear, nearly 50 percent of the reported injuries involved a fingertip amputation.

While the recall has been in place for several months now, it initially occurred when few if any Indianapolis residents had begun furniture shopping for the summer. As such, this recall is an important lesson when it comes to product recalls and older furniture that we might purchase used. According to the CPSC report, the dangerous beach chairs were sold at IKEA stores from February 2013 through December 2016. Given this timeline, residents of Indianapolis may have these dangerous products in their possession from prior summers, or they may have purchased a used chair on craigslist or at a garage sale.

Identifying Dangerous Products in Indianapolis

How can you know for certain if you or a family member has been using one of these hazardous beach chairs? You will need to check the article number on the product, which should be located on the wooden chair frame, and it also should be sewn into the chair’s fabric. Recalled article numbers include the following:

  • 902.280.08 (light red/blue striped);
  • 302.580.79 (red/blue striped);
  • 502.851.66 (solid white);
  • 802.873.95 (solid red);
  • 002.931.40 (solid green);
  • 303.120.24 (grey/white chevron);
  • 503.120.23 (light blue/white chevron); and
  • 003.120.25 (light red/white chevron).

If your chair has one of those article numbers, it is essential that you stop using the product immediately. Consumers who have these chairs are able to receive a replacement or a repair product.
