Indy Injury Lawyers Can Assist You With Your Case

A recent accident involving a young man who was hit by a car while crossing an intersection highlights the potential dangers faced by aggressive drivers and those who disobey traffic regulations. In addition to causing car accidents and injuries each year for countless other motorists, the actions of these drivers can result in serious personal injuries and even deaths for pedestrians.

Teen Injured By Car Running Red Light

In a January 2017 Fox 59 news report regarding a 16-year-old Indianapolis boy who was hit and critically injured while crossing the intersection of 62nd Street and Zionsville Road, the police were unclear as to the circumstances of the accident and called it an “unfortunate accident”. At the same time, those who live near the intersection claim that an accident was bound to occur due to poor lighting and general safety concerns.

While the intersection is equipped with traffic and pedestrian signals, a resident quoted in the story claims that it is not uncommon for the signals to work intermittently and for drivers to run red lights. Studies from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that nearly 40 percent of all motor vehicle accidents occur in intersections, and list the following as among the common causes::

  • Driver inattention;
  • Speeding and going too fast for conditions;
  • Inadequate surveillance of traffic issues and other motorists and pedestrians;
  • Failing to yield and disregarding traffic signs and signals.

Pedestrian Injuries In Indianapolis

With little to protect them against impacts from motor vehicles, pedestrian injuries can be severe and potentially deadly. Unfortunately, these types of accidents are not uncommon in our area. NHTSA crash statistics indicate that Indianapolis has one of the highest pedestrian accident rates in the country, with pedestrian deaths making up over a quarter of all traffic fatalities. Common types of these injuries include the following:

  • Road burns and severe cuts and lacerations;
  • Broken bones and multiple fractures;
  • Damage to internal organs due to the force of impacts;
  • Injuries to back and neck, including fractured vertebrae and damage to the spinal cord;
  • Head injuries, including concussions and traumatic brain injury.
