Road Construction Accidents Just as Likely in Daylight as After Dark

An Indianapolis Construction Accident Attorney Has The Answers You Need

The roadways of Indianapolis are full of dangerous and hazardous conditions, just like they are in almost any other city in America. When crews are doing road construction the circumstances can get even more dangerous. Road construction sites have a tendency to create additional hazards for drivers, especially when they are not careful to pay close attention to their surroundings. While road construction sites are dangerous at any time, many people might be under the impression that they are especially hazardous at during the night hours. However, that is not necessarily the case.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, since 2000 there have been 11 fatalities and 300 injuries per year from auto accidents that take place in road construction zones. Rear-end collisions are the most common type of accident, typically caused by drivers going too fast and not noticing that traffic in front of them has slowed. However, according to traffic engineers, accidents in work zones are no more likely to occur at night than they are during the day. Even though visibility is greater during the day, there are also typically a lot more cars on the road than at night. That means congestion is worse during the day, which is a leading cause of work zone accidents.

During nighttime driving, even though lighting is not as good, because there are fewer cars on the road, collisions are less likely to occur. One study done in 2008 showed that there was little difference in the amount of accidents at night compared to during the day. Sixty-four different work zones in four states were tracked. The study also found that the severity of the accidents was essentially the same and that rear-end collisions actually decreased during the night.

Of course, any accident in a road construction zone, night or day, or anywhere else for that matter, has the potential to cause serious injuries to those involved, including construction workers. Anyone who is hurt in a work zone accident caused by a reckless or inattentive driver should consider speaking with a personal injury lawyer.
